How TikTok engagement rate is calculated
Engagement rate is the share of people who did something with a video, not just saw it. On TikTok you add up four interactions:
Engagements = likes + comments + shares + saves
Then divide by one of two numbers and multiply by 100:
- By views: engagements ÷ views × 100
- By followers: engagements ÷ followers × 100
TikTok shows likes, comments, shares and saves on its videos, so you can count all four. Saves are the bookmark count on the video. A save means someone wanted to come back to it, and a share means they sent it to someone. Both are stronger signals than a like.
For a whole profile, add up the interactions across the videos you're measuring, then divide by their total views (or by followers × the number of videos).
By followers or by views?
Both are common, and they answer different questions.
By followers asks: how much does this creator's audience interact with them? It's easy to work out from a profile and easy to compare across accounts.
By views asks: of the people who saw this video, how many reacted? On TikTok this is usually the fairer measure. Much of a video's reach comes from the For You feed, which shows it to people who don't follow the creator. A video can reach 2 million people on an account with 20,000 followers. Divided by followers, that video's rate would be enormous and meaningless. Divided by views, it's comparable to any other video.
Use by views to compare videos and creators fairly. Use by followers when someone asks for it, and say which one you used.
What is a typical TikTok engagement rate?
Socialinsider's 2026 TikTok benchmarks, based on about 2 million TikTok posts from 214,507 profiles, put the average engagement rate by views at 4.20% for 2025, up from 3.85% in 2024. They count likes, comments, shares and saves, divided by views, the same formula as the calculator above.
Treat that as a rough reference, not a target. Rates vary by niche, by account size and by video, and different reports measure differently. The most useful comparison is a creator against their own usual rate.
Why one average hides the videos that matter
A single engagement rate for a profile mixes everything together. Say a creator posts 30 videos. Twenty-eight do about the same. One gets 40 times their usual views. One gets average views but three times their usual saves.
The profile average barely moves. Those two videos are the ones worth studying: the first found a much bigger audience, the second made people want to keep it. An average flattens both into a number that describes none of their videos.
That's why it helps to look at each video against the creator's usual, not at one rate for the whole account.
Each video's rate, against the creator's usual
SortViral is a free Chrome extension that does this on TikTok profiles, search, hashtag, sound and Explore pages.
- Hover a video to see its views, likes, comments, shares and saves, its engagement, its outlier score, views per day and the date it was posted.
- Sort by engagement to put the videos people interacted with most at the top, or by Outlier to find videos that got far more views than the creator usually gets. The usual is the median of their 30 most recent videos, leaving out pinned videos and videos under 3 days old, and each score shows that baseline.
- Export to CSV to do your own maths on every video.
Sort by views and engagement side by side and you see two lists: the videos the algorithm pushed, and the videos people loved. The best ones are often on both. For more on finding the top videos, see the most viewed TikTok on any profile. On Instagram, use the Instagram engagement rate calculator.

What is the formula for TikTok engagement rate?
Add likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by views (or by followers), and multiply by 100.
Should I use followers or views?
Views, in most cases. Many TikTok views come from people who don't follow the creator, so dividing by followers can make a single viral video look far more engaging than it was.
What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?
Socialinsider's 2026 benchmarks put the average by views at 4.20% for 2025. A better test is whether a video beats the creator's own usual rate.
Does the calculator store my numbers?
No. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
